Tongmu Pass
Tóng Mù Guān · 桐木关 (桐木關)
Fujian · China
Tongmu Village (Tongmu Guan) is a protected core area of the Wuyi Mountains in northern Fujian and is, by tradition, the birthplace of black tea — Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong. The original tea is unsmoked and flavoured by the local cultivar's natural sweetness; the smoked Lapsang Souchong variant (pine-smoked) was developed for the export market. Tongmu sits inside a UNESCO World Heritage zone, with strict controls on production volume.
