Wazuka

和束 · わづか · Wazuka

Kyoto · Japan

Wazuka Town is the most concentrated tea-growing area within the Uji region of Kyoto Prefecture, supplying roughly half of all "Uji tea" by volume. The mountainous terrain forces step-terraced cultivation and the morning river fog suits both shaded gyokuro /tencha and the higher-grade unshaded sencha for which Wazuka farmers have built their modern reputation. The town is also the centre of the Japanese single-cultivar (tankoucha) movement.
