Yame City in Fukuoka Prefecture (northern Kyushu) produces more than 40% of Japan's gyokuro — the largest share of any prefecture by some margin. The local microclimate (mountainous inland terrain with morning fog, similar to Uji) suits the long 20+ day shading period that gyokuro requires; the resulting cup is famously umami-dense, with the deep marine-broth flavour that distinguishes premium shaded greens from sencha.
