Heat retention while brewing tea: practical lessons
A small TeaDB experiment suggests that preheating and matching the vessel to the water volume can matter more than assuming one material always retains heat best.

What was tested
TeaDB compared a 75 ml porcelain vessel, a 120 ml porcelain vessel, Yixing clay, and a larger pot, measuring water temperature immediately after pouring and again after one and five minutes. The same field test also compared preheating, deliberately underfilling a pot, and leaving a gaiwan in a bath of hot water.
The useful signal
In this setup, vessel material alone did not produce a simple ranking. Preheating raised the starting temperature, while underfilling created a much larger temperature penalty. A hot-water bath helped only when used promptly; leaving the vessel standing eventually worked against the brew.
This is a practical experiment, not a universal laboratory result. Wall thickness, shape, pour speed, room temperature, and the specific clay or porcelain can all change the outcome.
What to do at the tea table
- Preheat the vessel when the tea benefits from high brewing temperature.
- Choose a pot or gaiwan close to the volume you actually intend to use.
- Do not assume that clay is automatically hotter than porcelain.
- Measure your own setup when temperature is critical.
