Yingde is a county-level city in northern Guangdong with a tea history stretching back to the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Modern Yingde red tea took off in the 1970s with the introduction of new cultivars — most famously Ying Hong No. 9 (英红九号), bred in 1961 from the Yunnan large-leaf cultivar (Yunnan Daye Zhong) and certified as a provincial variety in 1986. Yingde Hong Cha has earned numerous domestic and international tea-competition awards.
