Yingde Hong Cha No. 9

Yīng Dé Hóng Chá Jiǔ Hào · 英德红茶九号 (英德紅茶九號)

gongfu

Yingde Hong Cha No. 9 is a red tea from Yingde in northern Guangdong, made from the Ying Hong No. 9 cultivar — bred in 1961 from the Yunnan large-leaf cultivar (Yunnan Daye Zhong) and certified as a provincial variety in 1986. The dry leaf is tight, slim and heavy with golden tips; the cup is rich and mellow with a deep longan- fruit aroma. Yingde itself has a tea history reaching back to the Ming dynasty, but its modern red-tea industry took off in the 1970s with this cultivar.

The Yunnan large-leaf parentage of Ying Hong No. 9 gives this Guangdong red a richer body than typical Fujian reds — closer to a young Dianhong than to Keemun.
