Zhenghe

Zhèng Hé · 政和

Fujian · CN

Zhenghe County sits in northern Fujian (Nanping Prefecture), between the coastal Fuding region and the Wuyi Mountains. Tea production here goes back roughly a thousand years; in the Song dynasty the county produced bud tea (ya cha) presented as tribute to Emperor Huizong, who reportedly granted his reign title "Zhenghe" to the county. In 1874 a teaman from neighbouring Jiangxi introduced the red-tea method here, founding what became Zhenghe Gong Fu — one of the three Min Hong gongfu reds. Tea grows at 200–1,000 m elevation in mountainous terrain with a 260-day frost-free period and 1,600 mm of annual rainfall.
