Boseong County in South Jeolla Province is the largest tea- producing region in South Korea — historically responsible for around 40% of national tea output. The region's terraced plantations on misty mountainsides are a national landmark; the first commercial plantation was established by the Japanese occupation administration in 1939, and large-scale terraced farms (some up to 250 acres) became commonplace in the 1970s. Boseong producers commonly use the Yabukita cultivar imported during the colonial period, alongside Korean heirloom material.
