Jianzhan ("Jian ware") are dark-glazed iron-rich teabowls fired in Fujian's Jian kilns since the Song dynasty. The crystalline iron-oxide glazes produce hare's fur, oil-spot, and tortoiseshell patterns prized by both historical Chinese tea drinkers and Japanese tea ceremony as "tenmoku".
