Chiayi County in southwestern Taiwan contains the Alishan range (Alishan National Scenic Area), one of the most famous Taiwanese high-mountain oolong regions. Tea here grows at 1,000–1,600 m, typically from the Qingxin cultivar; the cool nights and frequent cloud cover slow leaf maturation and concentrate flavour, producing the soft, creamy, lightly oxidised "high-mountain" (gaoshan) profile.
