Pinglin District in New Taipei City is the heart of Taiwan's Wenshan Bao Zhong (Pouchong) production. Farmers brought trees and techniques from Fujian in the 19th century; the tea has been made here since around 1885. Bao Zhong is twist-shaped (rope-curled rather than ball-rolled), lightly oxidised, and traditionally wrapped in paper during drying — hence the name "wrapped kind". Production has steadily declined; modern Bao Zhong is a small-volume specialty.
