Производство в Пиншуе восходит к династии Тан (618–907), а при императоре Канси (1661–1722) чай стал императорской данью. Пик экспорта пришёлся на 1843–1894 годы; сегодня Пиншуй по-прежнему называют «родиной гунпаудера», хотя производство распространилось также в Фуцзянь, Гуандун, Аньхой и Хунань.
