Город Удзи в префектуре Киото — первый крупный чайный регион Японии и историческая родина техники притенения, которая делает возможными матча и гёкуро. Возделывание чая здесь восходит к концу XII века, когда монах Эйсай привёз семена из сунского Китая; притенение возникло у удзинских производителей в XVI веке.
